The Kiangan National Shrine, also known as the “Yamashita Shrine,” remains an important symbol of the Philippines’ wartime history and the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom. Vice President Sara Duterte recently shared her visit to the historic site in Kiangan, Ifugao, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to see one of the country’s notable historical landmarks. The shrine is known as the place where Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita officially surrendered at the end of World War II in the Philippines, marking the country’s liberation and the conclusion of the war. Duterte also admired the shrine’s design, which draws inspiration from traditional Ifugao houses, and shared her experience of reaching the top of the structure, where visitors can enjoy scenic views of nearby communities.
