Senate panel eyes increasing OVP budget for 2020, lauds Robredo-led initiatives to help poor Pinoys

The Senate Finance Committee has committed to further increasing the budget of the Office of the Vice President, to support its anti-poverty initiatives and efforts to professionalize its ranks.

At the committee hearing held Monday, September 16, the panel, led by Senator Sonny Angara, approved the P673.02-million budget for the OVP for 2020, following a presentation led by Vice President Leni Robredo herself.

The budget was approved upon the motion of Senate Majority Floor Leader Migz Zubiri, who moved that this be done “without prejudice to increasing it.”

VP Leni welcomed the move of the Senate committee, saying that this will help improve her office’s anti-poverty initiatives.

During the hearing, the panel also congratulated VP Leni and the rest of the OVP for the work they have been doing to assist poor communities around the Philippines, notably through its flagship program, Angat Buhay.

Sen. Angara said the panel will “at the very least, protect” the OVP’s proposed budget in the next steps of deliberations.

“At the very least, we will protect your budget, but I am sure many of us would even want to increase it, given the demands of your office. Napakalaki po ng mandato, ang laki rin po ng expectations ng mga tao, so we have to deal with all these things,” he added.
