Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday lauded the “inspiring” leadership of the late former president Corazon Aquino, underscoring the latter’s honest governance and the critical role she played in regaining the country’s democracy.

This as President Rodrigo Duterte downplayed the contributions of the ex-president by saying that she was popular only because she “lost her husband,” Sen. Ninoy Aquino, “in the hands of” the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Duterte issued the said remarks just after the commemoration of the former president’s 10th death anniversary.

VP Leni, in turn, said Cory Aquino proved that she was more than just Ninoy’s wife, giving the power entrusted to her the respect that it deserved.

Robredo said in the weekly radio show, BISErbisyong LENI.

VP Leni, who credits her political awakening to the 1986 People Power Revolution, noted that the former president exemplified strength amid the difficulties she faced under the Marcos regime, as well as during the “turning point” of regaining the country’s democracy.
