Office of the Vice President

Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday said it was inappropriate to mark as a holiday the birth centenary of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
While entitled to celebrate the life of their late patriarch, VP Leni believes such should not be imposed by the family on the public, amid the abuses during the dictatorship that they have not acknowledged nor apologized for.
Parang nire-revise iyong kuwento, nire-revise iyong kasaysayan, na hindi naman dapat,” the Vice President told reporters during the 40th founding anniversary of Doña Remedios Trinidad in Bulacan, a town named after the late dictator’s mother-in-law.
Malacañang declared September 11, Marcos’ 100th birth anniversary, a special non-working holiday in Ilocos Norte. President Rodrigo Duterte said he approved this upon the family’s request, noting that he had no reason to refuse because the late dictator is revered in their home province.
This comes after the President revealed that the Marcos family is “willing” to return “some” of the ill-gotten wealth they amassed during the dictatorship.
VP Leni reiterated anew if the family was sincere about this, they must come clean to the public.
So bakit kailangan nating ipagbunyi bilang isang bayan iyong naging buhay ng yumaong pangulo?” she added.
