Andro’s life was profoundly altered by Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), that at the tender age of 17, the word "dialysis" became intertwined with his existence.
The kidneys of individuals with Stage 5 CKD are severely damaged, ceasing their function of filtering waste from the blood. Waste products can accumulate in the bloodstream, leading to various health complications.
But Andro's condition imposed a significant financial burden on his family. The income of their family was insufficient to cover his regular hemodialysis sessions.
He was compelled to stop his education, and his entire family relocated from Mati, Davao Oriental, to Davao City. They also rented a place near the hospital to minimize additional transportation expenses.
Andro approached the Office of the Vice President Davao Satellite Office (OVP) to request medical assistance. Through the Medical Assistance to Indigent Patients (MAIP), the OVP issued him a referral letter for treatment at the Southern Philippines Medical Center.
The OVP also assisted Andro in arranging his dialysis treatment schedule, as his previous schedule extended into the night.
The OVP aspires a more comfortable life for Andro and other young people like him who are facing health challenges.
